Scary Tires and Electricity

Writer's picture: ElizabethElizabeth

As an adult that has dealt with a lot of scary things, I feel fairly unflappable with life now. However, few things bring me dread like electrical issues and automotive issues. For some reason, I have never gotten over my inferiority complex around cars. I've had cars all of my adult life and I have been responsible for dealing with my own car issues during this time. It doesn't matter if it is routine maintenance or something terribly wrong, I still feel like a little kid in trouble. Imagine my terror when I noticed a crack the size of the Grand Canyon on our UTV tires. We purchased the UTV to work as our plow during the winter months and to haul things during the rest of the year. We've affectionately named the yellow and black UTV: Bumble Bee. We've had several of our friends and family drive it during their stays with us. Everyone has really enjoyed zipping around on it:)

Of course, once we start having several inches of snow we can't use our plow. Thankfully, Matt volunteered to take on the tire situation. He was definitely my knight in shining armor at that moment. He ordered the tires and then we had to find someone to mount the tires, etc. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find the correct tires for this. It is not just one tire size, but two (front vs back sets)! And almost nobody around here carries small specialty sizes. Who knew this would be so time consuming?!?!

I think I mentioned before that we have been working on the big cottage and trying to get it ready to start renting to a long term tenant in January. We aren't doing any major renovations other than painting, cleaning, new water heater, new exterior doors, new fixtures, etc. The cottage, like the majority of exterior buildings, was left empty for quite a while and had not been cared for in a long time. It has been really exciting to see new life being given to this old building. Once it's completed, I plan to do a more lengthy blog post, but here is a little sneak peek:)

I've always had a healthy respect for electricity. Maybe it was watching the character, Tim, getting zapped off the fence in Jurassic Park when I was a kid. I guess that always stuck with me:) As a result of this, I've let Matt do a lot of the lights because he is comfortable with it. My father-in-law is a retired electrician so Matt grew up with that being a normal thing to deal with. However, he has been handling so many different things that I decided it was time he teach me rather than continuing to wait. I installed two light fixtures this week! It felt so empowering to fix those myself and to see something very tangible that I created. I know it sounds silly, but I highly recommend it for a confidence boost:)

It's really exciting that we are starting to transition into a time where we will be letting people on the property. As an introvert, it is also kind of terrifying. I just want everyone to like the place and appreciate what we have done. Hopefully, we can create a place that feels like home for all who visit. That's all I have for now. Take care of yourselves and don't forget to rest :)
